St. Patrick's day

Posted by missmuffcake at 02:20 PM on March 08, 2010 Comments comments (0)
I remember in junior high having a green jacket (my only article of green clothing) that I wore for St. Patrick's day, problem is a popular girl had the same jacket and it was really awkward. As an adult St. Patrick's day is put on the back burner of holidays for me. Green looks horrible on me and I don't really worry about being pinched. However this year I have been in a holiday mood so I gathered some fun ideas for the day to share.

First off food! A traditional meal on this day would include meat and Guinness which are so not vegan so I will stay away! However as a vegan I could come up with a cabbage and potato soup/stew and serve a vegan stout with fresh warm soda bread. Or I could serve green foods likes grapes, green frosted cupcakes and my favorite guacamole!
When it comes to green I like to think outside the box. Why not try to 'green' up your routine in time for spring? Clean up your space with an eco/animal friendly line of cleaners. If you want to be a green purist go with a green tinted all purpose cleaner. Also bust out your green reusable grocery bag to take to the store to stock up on food for the week.
How about green crafts? Shamrocks made from eco-felt or foam that can be attached to a pin back is simple, fun and cheap. How about a coloring page you can use for shrinky dink charms or embroidery? There are lots of fun crafts I am sure you can dream up!

Have fun and try not to get pinched!

THE BIGGEST GIVEAWAY EVER!

As many of you know, CreepyQueen was awarded an etsy grant! With this grant money we will be purchasing an ad in Gothic Beauty Magazine, to promote the website and street team.  Unfortuntately, the amount we received was only enough to purchase a black and white ad. We feel that a color ad would help to best represent CreepyQueen, so we're holding this giveaway in order to raise the extra dollars to upgrade the ad to a color one!

So what does this mean for you, our loyal readers?

PRIZE
1 (or more depending on the entries) lucky winner[s] will have their item and shop link featured in the Gothic Beauty Ad, which will be printed 20 000 times and be sold at such stores as Barnes and Noble, Borders, and sent to over 2000 subscribers!

How to Enter
Post a link to a high res picture your favourite item of yours below. Try to choose something that you can re-create, or that you have many in stock of. Otherwise choose an item that you can hold off listing until May, when the issue goes to print. Try to take the picture with a plain or white background so that it is easier for us to edit it into the ad.

simple home decor tricks

I lived in a small apartment for 10 years, I had no purpose of style really because I was always in need of room and more space. In 2008 my boyfriend and I moved into our own home and we took a one hour trip to the closest Ikea. Our style is similar - we both like black and red and modern. We settled on a basic couch in a shade of dark gray/almost black:

It was afordable and after talking to people about  it we saw it  was very cat fur friendly. The couch was a starting point to buy a red chair, red and black tables and red and dark grey DVD stroage towers that reach to the celling (we both love movies). We had my mother (DIY home styler/painter) paint one focal wall red. It looked snazzy till I realized we needed accessories!
We kind of went with a Catholic kitsch theme. We have an altar set up on our fire place mantel, have various statues of religious figures that we bought at the local botanica or have bought used. We also have lots of 7 day candles and we light them at night and it looks stunning! Another thing we did to add more of our touch was brought in skull prints and accessories.

We are still working on getting new eco friendly black blinds in our picture window and more art work in place. I think it will always be ongoing. We also need to work on how to organize the cat tower and cat pirate ship (yes my cat is spoiled!). We are in no rush and I urge people to take it slow and make their space reflect them!

Tofu Guru - making tofu rad not scary!

Posted by missmuffcake at 12:13 AM on February 09, 2010 Comments comments (0)
By now everyone should know that I am vegan! As a vegan people automaticcly assume I love tofu - in this case the people are correct. I lovvveeeee tofu - I eat it daily! However tofu is not the only thing I am eating. I am always looking for new things to try and since I cannot find a cooking show on cable that fits my needs I go to YouTube to check out what Tofu Guru has cooking or uncooking when she happens to be doing raw!

Name: Brittany Roberts Age: 19 Location: Boston area, MA

How long have you been vegan?

A little over 3 years. (Halloween's my "anniversary")

What made you go vegan?

Research, basically. I was familiar with vegetarianism, but then I heard the word "vegan" and wanted to know what it entailed. After Googling "factory farms," there really was no going back.

What is your favorite way of promoting veganisim?

By setting a great example! It's all about the food, if you cook people delicious vegan food (and prove that you don't live on apples and twigs...), they'll be more receptive to the whole idea. Then when they hit the hard issues that most omnivores aren't used to thinking about(like the animal abuse, environmental harm, and health risks of a diet based on meat, eggs, and dairy), they'll already have positive feelings toward the vegan diet, and making changes to their own eating habits won't seem so drastic and scary.

What got you started on YouTube?

I love YouTube. I'm afraid it's a bit of an addiction. I love watchingvloggers share their opinions and sense of humor in bite-sized videos. So when I started my own show, I went for a similar quirky, off-the-cuff feel. TTG is first and foremost a podcast, but YouTube isso popular I figured I might as well post my episodes there as well, and now it's where most of my audience is!

Favorite ingredient to cook with?

Peanut butter. Hands Down.

Favorite meal to cook?

Something quick and simple: a bunch of vegetables, thrown in a frying pan, served over rice. I only get fancy on the show.

Any big plans for the future?

Well, this fall I'm headed to art school to study photography and design, so depending on my living conditions "The Tofu Guru" may become"Vegan Dorm Cooking"!

If you know me at all you know what a Morrissey/Smiths freak I am. From a lot of art (shrines, posters) and even lyrics tattooed on my arm (There is A Light That Never Goes Out) I cannot get enough. Since love is on the mind let me give some to Moz.

In The Kitchen

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen baking up vegan treats. My kitchen is a odd mix of 50s diner and pirate fun! I like finding cool things that make hosting vegan potlucks fun and to add to the quirkiness of my kitchen! Do you spend a lot of time in the kitchen? What are your must haves?
